Start of MUSICA open test phase
by Florian Goldenberg 12 Nov '25

12 Nov '25

Dear ASC users, We are happy to announce that the Open Testphase for MUSICA is here. Access to MUSICA will be open for all institutions that have access to the other ASC clusters, without any cost, for the duration of the test phase. Currently, the cluster is in a state which is very close to the planned operations state. However, certain unexpected errors can still occur, and we might also still change parts of the setup or the functionality. The test phase will be open at least until the end of the year, probably longer. In the beginning, only the Vienna part of MUSICA will be accessible, Innsbruck and Linz will be added soon. Please consult our MUSICA specific documentation, which can be found at: https://docs.vsc.ac.at/musica_test/. We provide a Matrix chat room, where users can discuss amongst themselves or with us: 'MUSICA Open Testphase General': https://matrix.tuwien.ac.at/#/room/#asc-musica-open-testphase:tuwien.ac.at Note: If you do not have a Matrix account via your institution, you can get one for free at matrix.org. For project managers: Please open https://projects.asc.ac.at in your browser, which will redirect you to our Login Portal: https://auth.asc.ac.at. Next, create a new account using the 'Sign Up' button. Complete all steps by using your institutional credentials (or create a local user if your institution is not listed). During the Open Test Phase you will need to request project creation rights by sending a short email with your name, username and affiliation to musica-projects(a)asc.ac.at. After your request was granted, go back to https://projects.asc.ac.at and press the "Create Project" button. Only test projects are currently possible, no documents needed! Once the project has been created, you can request resources from the project detail page. Note that, during the test phase, only one project per manager is possible. As soon as the ASC team grants your resource request, you will be able to invite other users from the "Users & Groups" tab on the project page. To start adding a user, type the user's mail address into the "Add or invite users" box and select an already signed-up user, or click "Add invite" to send an invitation email to the user. After inviting all users to the project, finally press "Submit" to send out the invitations. Users that are already known to the system will be added immediately. For users: Please ask your project manager to invite you to your groups test project. If you already received an invitation, please follow the link and complete the invitation process. Note: You will only be able to log in once you have completed your account creation. On first log in you will be asked to setup a second authentication factor (MFA) (see below). How To Login: As soon as your account is a member of a project, you will be able to log in via SSH to musica.vie.asc.ac.at. Alternatively, you can also directly use one of the two login nodes: login01.musica.vie.asc.ac.at and login02.musica.vie.asc.ac.at. For the time being, there is no access via Jupyterhub or NoMachine. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Please note that, while no SMS verification is needed, we still do enforce the use of MFA. Available methods are: - WebAuthn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebAuthn) - TOTP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time-based_one-time_password) Your old Yubikeys will not work, as they are not supporting WebAuthn. If you're not familiar with the two provided methods, it's probably easiest to start with TOTP by downloading e.g. "Twilio Authy" or "Google Authenticator" on your smartphone. In roughly two weeks, on the 24th of November at 13:00, we will provide an online introductory meeting, where open questions can be answered. This will be done via Zoom, and the invitation will be sent out a few days before. Two weeks after that meeting, we will hold an online introduction to building software on MUSICA (there will be an extra announcement for that!). For further information please visit https://docs.asc.ac.at/. Thanks for your patience, Best Regards, ASC Team

Downtime extended due to error
by Florian Goldenberg 12 Nov '25

12 Nov '25

Dear users, We are sorry to inform you that we have to extend the downtime of VSC4 and VSC5 to 12:00 today at least. The filesystem still showed an error yesterday evening, and we need to make sure nothing is compromised to prevent data loss or corruption. A mail will be sent out immediately when the systems can be used again. Best regards ASC-Team

by Florian Goldenberg 26 Oct '25

26 Oct '25

Dear users, We managed to repair the fabric problems, and both VSC4 and VSC5 are useable again. Jupyterhub is currently still down, and not all NoMachine nodes are reachable, but SSH login and job submission work normally, and the storage volumes are reachable. Best reagrds ASC-Team

VSC4 down
by Florian Goldenberg 25 Oct '25

25 Oct '25

Dear users! Due to an as yet unexplained error in the routing systems between the VSC4 fabric and the Storage/VSC5 fabric, the entire VSC4 (compute and login nodes) is not accessible at the moment. Unfortunately, we cannot give any prognosis as to when this can be solved. VSC5 is available and works as expected. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Best regards VSC-Team

Strange Storage behaviour
by Florian Goldenberg 12 Sep '25

12 Sep '25

Dear ASC users, We are currently migrating all files in DATA to our new storage system. To ensure data safety and to avoid interruptions, all data is first mirrored, then the old version removed. This had the unexpected effect of suddenly and significantly increasing the amount of storage used by each project (up to double the amount). To mitigate this, we increased all quota to prevent any overruns and subsequent interruptions to the project work. To see your current quota, please log in and type: mmlsquota --block-size auto -j data_fs7XXXX data where 7XXXX is your 5 digit project number. The correct quota is not visible on the service webpage. Please excuse the caused confusion, the migration will most likely run for another 2-3 days, after which the quota state should return to normal. Storage almost full
by Florian Goldenberg 24 Jul '25

24 Jul '25

Dear VSC users. Currently, the entire DATA storage volume is filled up to 99% - there is only a rather tiny amount of space left, so we have to expect jobs to begin failing now. Please check your data and remove everything that is no longer actively used or that is of temporary/intermediate nature. Data that you actively work on can of course stay. Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on 4.8P 4.8P 56T 99% /gpfs/data Best Regards VSC-Team -- Mag.
