[VSC Training News] Parallelization with MPI, 28-29 April 2025 + 5-6 May 2025
by VSC Training Newsletter 15 Apr '25

15 Apr '25

Dear VSC users and friends, join our upcoming MPI course(s) and get a good understanding of one of the most iconic tools in HPC. MPI (Message Passing Interface) and HPC (high-performance computing) could not be without each other. It does not matter whether you run a large-scale simulation or you train a large AI model, the backbone that makes this possible is MPI or one of it's derivatives. It lets you run code across many nodes at once unlocking performance gains and making huge problems solvable. And a big welcome to our new subscribers - please see the welcome/about note at the end of this newsletter. Parallelization with MPI 28-29 April 2025 + 5-6 May 2025 On clusters and distributed memory architectures, parallel programming with the Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the dominating programming model. The first 2 half-days course teaches parallel programming with MPI starting from a beginners level and the second 2 half-days course builds on this knowledge and addresses intermediate and advanced topics of MPI. Hands-on sessions (in C, Fortran, and Python) allow to immediately test and understand the basic constructs of the Message Passing Interface (MPI). Prerequisites: For the first course no prior MPI knowledge is required. The second course builds on the knowledge gained in the first. You should have basic programming skills in either C/C++ or Fortran or Python. Lecturer: Claudia Blaas-Schenners (Member of the MPI Forum; VSC Research Center, TU Wien and EuroCC Austria) For more details & registration see: Parallelization with MPI (Beginner) 28-29 April 2025, 09:30-14:00 CEST Content level: Basic = 8:00h (100%) https://events.vsc.ac.at/e/MPI-2025-04 (register before 22 April 2025) Parallelization with MPI (Intermediate - Advanced) 5-6 May 2025, 09:30-14:00 CEST Basic = 0:00h (0%) + Intermediate = 6:00h (75%) + Advanced = 2:00h (25%) https://events.vsc.ac.at/e/MPI-2025-05 (register before 29 April 2025) All training events by VSC https://events.vsc.ac.at/category/4/ Welcome to / about the [VSC Training News] mailing list You are subscribed to this mailing list because you are or have been a VSC user, subscribed yourself, or attended a training course in the past few months. [VSC Training News] Python for HPC, 09+11+13 December 2024
by VSC Training Newsletter 28 Nov '24

28 Nov '24

Dear VSC users and friends, the year and also the training year 2024 is coming to an end, but in December we still do have 2 courses for you: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Python for HPC 09.+11.+13.12.2024, 09:00 - 16:30 https://events.vsc.ac.at/e/Python4HPC-2024-12 During the past ten years, Python has seen a meteoric rise in both popularity and demand not only in general purpose programming but also in scientific computing. Data science and machine learning further contributed to this trend. Despite Python's architectural shortcomings, even the field of High-Performance Computing (HPC), with its highly specific demands, profited from recent developments with various libraries and optimizations. This course shows the interested participant how to put Python to use on an HPC cluster as the VSC, how to optimize the code to increase performance, how to parallelize code for single and multi-node deployment as well as GPU offloading. Participants will be introduced to the most practical tools and various indispensable libraries for HPC use cases. After completion of this three-day course, participants are able to create the environment they need on an HPC cluster, optimize and parallelize their Python use-cases and submit their jobs for batch processing on a supercomputer. The content is delivered online over a three-day period with a day off after each course day. This should enable participants to have enough time to revisit the covered topics and come up with questions on the next course day. Registration deadline is Monday, 2 December 2024. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction to Deep Learning 16.-17.12.2024, 09:00 - 16:30 https://events.vsc.ac.at/e/DL-2024-12 Deep Learning (DL) has enjoyed a surge in popularity during the last decade. This is mainly owed to the fact that DL is computationally quite expensive and needs vast amounts of data to train useful models. Both, computational resources and large datasets have become more readily available in recent years, leading to breakthroughs in DL applications. This course aims at interested participants from all domains, who have not yet jumped on the bandwagon of the DL trend. The course will cover the basic principles of fully connected neural networks, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for computer vision, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) for text or speech recognition, transfer learning to leverage pre-trained models, and touch on large language models (LLMs) which have become all the rage in the past year. This course is fully booked, but you can still sign up for the waiting list. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are currently setting up the course program for the first months of 2025, please stay tuned and find the up to date information about all VSC training events here: https://vsc.ac.at/training Best regards, VSC training team

Dear VSC users and friends, Compute Units Driving Acceleration? Cores Unleashed for Data Analysis? Complex Unification of Distributed Algorithms? If you don't know what CUDA is about then this course is for you: CUDA 4 Dummies 29.-30.10.2024, 09:00-17:00 CET (Zoom) https://events.vsc.ac.at/e/CUDA-2024-10 CUDA is the standard API for code development targeting NVIDIA GPUs and a number of impressive examples have already been given in diverse areas from particle physics to computational biology. CUDA allows simple extensions of standard C/C++/Fortran code with GPU-specific functions. In this way thousands of cores available on the GPU can be leveraged to work in parallel and thus carry out significant fractions of the computational workload on the device rather than the CPU. There is also a vast set of auxiliary tools available to the developer including libraries, code templates, building blocks, analysis tools, developmental frameworks, and in general a vivid community making up the CUDA Developer Zone. It is often for this multifaceted support environment that the interested beginner is feeling overwhelmed and unsettled about which particular first steps should best be taken to gain a straightforward introduction into the subject. For exactly this reason the present course is offering a systematic step-by-step introduction into GPU computing from the perspective of the newcomer. Basic design principles will be established, central programming techniques acquired and a number of state-of-the-art workflows examined that efficiently employ the GPU and are frequently used in scientific computing. This course provides lectures, demos, and hands-on labs. It provides instant access to the software you need, whether you're using an HPC system, cloud, or laptop. Join our online course to get to know the stack and make your life a bit EESSIER. Introduction to EESSI - European Environment for Scientific Software Installations 04.10.2024, 09:00 - 11:00 CEST https://events.vsc.ac.at/e/EESSI-2024-10 Registration ends today! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. We would like to especially highlight the lecture "VSC-School I" during the upcoming winter semester which allows students of TU Wien and of other Austrian universities via a co-registration https://www.tuwien.at/studium/zulassung/mitbelegung to earn credits (ECTS). Therefore, we do offer priority registration for VSC users and students and members of Austrian universities and public research institute until 28 October 2024 for the "MPI course" which is the core part of the lecture: Parallelization with MPI 18.-21.11.2024, 09:30 - 14:00 CET, TU Wien & ONLINE (Hybrid format) On clusters and distributed memory architectures, parallel programming with the Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the dominating programming model. This 4 half-days course teaches parallel programming with MPI starting from a beginners level. Hands-on sessions (in C, Fortran, and Python) allow to immediately test and understand the basic constructs of the Message Passing Interface (MPI). https://events.vsc.ac.at/e/MPI-2024-11 Priority registration for VSC users and students until 28 October 2024. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. For all newbies we offer two introductory courses: Linux command line 09.10.2024, 09:00 - 16:00 CEST This course is targeted for our new users who might not have worked on the Linux command line before. You will learn how to login to VSC and step-by-step we will show you how to work on the Linux command line and a few basic things that will help you to organize your workflows on the cluster. Focusing on hands-on teaching throughout the course, you will immediately try out what you've heard and adapt it to your own needs. https://events.vsc.ac.at/e/VSC-Linux-2024-10 Registration deadline 7 October 2024. Introduction to Working on the VSC Clusters 24.10.2024, 09:00 - 17:00 CEST In this course we will help you getting started on the VSC clusters, Austria's most powerful supercomputers. We'll focus on using the VSC clusters and especially their queuing system efficiently. It is from beginners level (the first steps on a supercomputer) to intermediate level (some experience on VSC or any other compute cluster) and equally relevant to those who will merely be running existing software as to those who will develop scientific codes . https://events.vsc.ac.at/e/VSC-Intro-2024-10 Registration deadline 21 October 2024. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. All upcoming training events: Registration for all our courses in October and November 2024 is currently open.
